Croque monsieur – French cheese sandwich

A grilled sandwich with ham, gruyère and béchamel. The bread bakes in the oven until the cheese melts and the top turns golden.

    • 4 skiver Thick toast bread
    • 4 skiver Cooked ham
    • 80 g Gruyère, grated
  • Béchamel

    • 20 g Butter
    • 20 g Plain flour
    • 2 dl Milk
    • 0.3 tsk Grated nutmeg

    Make the béchamel

    1. Melt butter in a small saucepan. Stir in flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add milk gradually, stirring constantly, until the sauce is smooth and thick. Season with nutmeg.

    Assemble and grill

    1. Spread béchamel on one side of each slice. Place ham and half the cheese on two slices. Top with the remaining slices.
    2. Spread the remaining béchamel on top and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Bake at 220 °C for 8–10 minutes until the cheese is golden.
