Suggestions

  • • About 2 litres. Serve warm, or chill and drink ice cold.

Side Pairings

  • • Salted nuts.

Dessert Pairings

  • • A slice of cinnamon cake.

Storage

Fresh

  • • Duration: 4 days
  • • Temperature: 5°C
  • • Method: Keep refrigerated in clean, closed bottles for 3–4 days. Cool quickly. Not for room temperature without proper preservation.

Frozen

  • • Duration: 6 months
  • • Temperature: -18°C
  • • Method: Freeze in portions for 3–6 months. Thaw in the fridge and warm gently.

Reheating

  • • Stovetop: Warm in a pot until pleasantly hot — avoid a hard boil.

Tips

Preparation

  • • A mix of sweet and tart apples works well. Orange peel adds bitter depth — rinse well.

Cooking

  • • The longer on LOW, the deeper the spice. Taste after 6 hours if you are home.
  • • If you already have mild apple juice from the slow cooker: warm it with orange and spices on LOW for 30–45 minutes instead of starting from whole apples.

Serving

  • • Ice-cold cider is a different drink from the warm one — both work.

Variations

Flavor

  • Without star anise the drink stays round — cinnamon and cloves carry most of it.

Health

  • Skip sweetener at first. Apples and orange often give enough sweetness.

Method

  • Staying on LOW the whole way gives the deepest spice. If you are home after 6 hours, taste and stop there.
